My kids love french toast. I mean, really. Love. French. Toast. They would eat french toast or pancakes every single day of their lives if I let them. I enjoy making breakfast for them and often look for ways to make it a little different and more exciting.
Enter: Burger King’s french toast sticks.
Truth be told, my children have never had them, but I thought I could take a tip from BK and turn our weekly french toast into sticks by developing a healthier copycat Burger King french toast sticks recipe. It’s really not all that complicated to make a healthier version if you start by avoiding the frying and bake them instead. You can use whatever bread you like. We used a white/wheat here, but you can certainly use something more rich like a brioche if you want the sticks to be a little softer and more decadent.
Copycat Burger King French Toast Sticks
Ditch the drive-thru and make your own healthier version of this tasty AM treat.
- egg: 1, large
- milk or cream: ⅔ cups
- vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon
- cinnamon: 1 teaspoon
- salt: ¼ teaspoon
- bread: 6 slices, crusts removed and cut into 3 sticks each
- cooking spray: for pan
Step 1: Place your oven rack onto the second level from the broiler and set your oven to the broiler setting. Line a baking sheet with foil and place a cooling rack inside of it. Spray generously with cooking spray.
Step 2: In a large bowl, whisk together egg, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
Step 3: Quickly dip each stick into the egg mixture. Do not soak too long or else it will become soggy.
Step 4: Place sticks onto prepared baking sheet and spray with cooking spray. Bake under the broiler for 2-3 minutes, keeping a close eye on the sticks. Not all broilers were created equal, so adjust your times accordingly. Flip sticks over and cook on the second side for approximately another 1.5 minutes.
Step 5: Turn oven from broiler setting to 375 degrees and bake for another 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and serve warm with syrup.
