There is no better way to end a meal than with a delicious baked dessert. This Pear and Sultana Crumble recipe is the perfect simple dessert which your whole family will enjoy and the kids won’t even mind that they are eating fruit for dessert. This recipe is also budget-friendly, as you simply need a few pantry staples and can make the most of inexpensive pears while they are in season (good varieties right now include Beurre Bosc and Packhams Triumph).
I think this Pear and Sultana Crumble is perfect served on its own (especially for the little kids) but for special occasions I’ll add a scoop of vanilla ice cream of drizzle it with warm homemade custard. I usually make this crumble in a large baking dish to share, however you can also divide the mixture into individual ramekins which makes serving it even easier and best of all there will be no fights over who has a bigger serve – well, hopefully not anyway!

Pear and Sultana Crumble
A budget-friendly everyday dessert that's quick to make and absolutely yummy.
- pears: 1.2 kilograms
- cinnamon: ½ teaspoon
- caster sugar: ¼ cup
- sultanas: ½ cup
- rolled oats: 1 cup
- plain flour: 6 tablespoons
- chilled butter: 110g
- brown sugar ½ cup
Step 1. Preheat your oven to 200ºC fan-forced and lightly grease a 20cm x 20cm square baking dish.
Step 2. Peel and slice the pears into quarters and place them along with the cinnamon and caster sugar into a large saucepan with the lid on and cook over a medium heat for 6 - 8 minutes or until the pears are just tender when tested with a knife. Transfer the cooked pears to your baking dish and carefully scatter through the sultanas.
Step 3. While the pears are cooking you can make the crumble topping by placing all of the crumble ingredients into a medium bowl and use your fingertips to rub the butter through the ingredients until there are no loose bits left.
Step 4. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the top of the pears and place the baking dish into the oven to cook for 35 - 40 minutes or until the crumble begins to turn a lovely golden brown. Allow the Pear and Sultana Crumble to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
