Growing up, tortillas played a large part of my family meals, and my mother always made them for my sisters and me. So of course one of my favorite snacks—cinnamon tortilla chips—consisted of this Latin staple. These snacks were also a treat, since one of the key parts of the recipe is sugar—which means they were more of a once a week snack than a daily eat.
Now a mother myself, I make these tasty treats with just a bit of a twist on the traditional recipe. I swap a healthier tortilla in lieu of a flour tortilla and use more cinnamon than sugar in the sprinkle mixture. Easy to make, they take no longer than twenty minutes to whip up, and with a little help from mi hijo they are a yummy (and healthier) treat any day of the week.
Healthy Tortilla Cinnamon Chips
My twist on a nostalgic favorite childhood recipe. Can't go wrong with crunchy tortillas, cinnamon, and sugar!
- multigrain tortillas: 4 (makes 16 large chips or 32 small chips)
- cinnamon sugar: 4 tablespoons
- butter: 2 tablespoons
Step 1: While gathering your ingredients, preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Step 2: Using a pizza cutter, slice 4-6 medium size tortillas. Cut the slices in fourths or in eighths---depending on how large you would like your baked chips to be.
Step 3: After melting butter, smooth a layer over both sides of the tortilla slice.
Step 4: Place the slices on a baking sheet, with enough space between each chip. Place in over for 10-15 minutes, checking every 5 minutes to insure slices do not overcook. Use a fork to tap on the slice to check if the slice has hardened into a chip.
Step 5: Remove from oven, and let cool for at least 10 minutes.
Tortilla cinnamon chips with a healthy twist are ready to be eaten!
